A Seed for the Future: Children Discover Biodiversity in Taormina

22/05/2026

On 24 April 2026, the Villa Comunale of Taormina — the iconic public garden originally laid out as the private park of Scottish noblewoman Lady Florence Trevelyan, and also known as Parco Trevelyan — hosted an event dedicated to environmental education for the youngest generations, as part of activities of the INSPIRE project.

On 24 April 2026, Taormina hosted an event dedicated to environmental education for the youngest generations. Organised under the INSPIRE Project – co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg Euro-MED 2021–2027 Programme with the support of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with the Municipality of Messina as Lead Partner – the initiative placed local children at the centre of a hands-on journey to discover the value of biodiversity.

The event was held in the presence of Beatrice Briguglio, INSPIRE Project officer for the Municipality of Messina, and Nino Mostaccio from Slow Food, the project partner responsible for the agrobiodiversity mapping methodology. Together, they guided the young participants through an educational path exploring the meaning and importance of biodiversity, using accessible language and engaging, age-appropriate methods.

The highlight of the day was the planting of new trees – a concrete and symbolically meaningful gesture that allowed children to experience firsthand how environmental stewardship begins with small, everyday actions capable of making a lasting difference for the territory.

The event forms part of the broader INSPIRE Project strategy for the valorisation of Mediterranean agrobiodiversity and the raising of awareness among local communities, starting with the youngest generations.
