The Mediterranean is one of the richest regions in the world in terms of biodiversity, landscapes and agricultural traditions. This unique heritage is deeply connected to local identities, cultures and ways of life. However, increasing pressure from unsustainable tourism and environmental challenges is putting these resources at risk.
INSPIRE is a European cooperation project working across Mediterranean territories to integrate biodiversity preservation and agrobiodiversity into tourism planning and destination management. The project promotes a new model of tourism that is more sustainable, resilient and rooted in local communities.
The video introduces this vision through a journey across different partner regions, showcasing landscapes, local practices and the people who actively contribute to preserving Mediterranean biodiversity. From coastal areas to rural territories, the project highlights the importance of linking tourism with local knowledge, traditional agriculture and ecosystem protection.
Across partner countries — including Italy, Spain, Greece, France and Albania — INSPIRE brings together public authorities, research institutions, local communities and stakeholders. Through cooperation and knowledge exchange, these actors work together to co-create solutions that respond to real local needs.
The project develops shared tools and approaches that support territories in improving tourism management, enhancing local value chains and strengthening the role of agrobiodiversity as a strategic resource. By testing these solutions in real contexts, INSPIRE contributes to building practical, transferable models for sustainable tourism across the Mediterranean.
At its core, INSPIRE promotes a shift in perspective: from tourism as a pressure on territories, to tourism as a driver of regeneration, capable of protecting ecosystems, supporting communities and enhancing cultural and natural heritage.
This approach contributes to a more conscious way of travelling, where visitors become part of a wider effort to preserve the identity, diversity and resilience of Mediterranean destinations.
